Starlink speeds have reached new heights, with download rates surging past 100 Mbps to around 130 Mbps across most of the United States. Recent data from Ookla’s Speedtest.net shows SpaceX’s satellite internet service has evolved from a last-resort option to a legitimate competitor for traditional broadband providers.
Major Starlink Speed Improvements Across America
The latest Ookla report reveals impressive growth in Starlink’s performance. Median download rates climbed from 100 Mbps in Q1 2025 to 132 Mbps in Q4, before settling at 128 Mbps in Q1 2026. Perhaps more significantly, users in every state except Alaska now achieve median download speeds of 100 Mbps or higher.
Upload speeds have also seen substantial gains, with 22 states now experiencing median upload rates of 20 Mbps or higher, up from the previous 15 Mbps baseline. Some states witnessed dramatic improvements, with New Jersey, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming seeing year-over-year download speed increases of 80-90%.
From Network Congestion to Competitive Performance
This turnaround represents a remarkable recovery for Starlink. In 2022, the service suffered significant speed drops due to network congestion, with download rates plummeting from 91 Mbps to 63 Mbps. This decline even influenced the FCC’s decision to deny Starlink an $886 million subsidy.
SpaceX addressed these challenges by dramatically expanding their satellite constellation from over 3,000 to more than 10,000 satellites, with approximately 8,700 currently operational. This infrastructure investment has paid dividends, with Starlink capacity getting a 700% boost from new FCC rules that promise even greater network capacity improvements.
Meeting FCC Broadband Standards
The speed improvements have positioned Starlink as a legitimate broadband alternative. According to Ookla, 44.7% of Starlink users in Q4 2025 met the FCC’s minimum broadband standards of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload speeds, compared to just 17.4% in Q1 2025.
Even Alaska, the only state below the 100 Mbps threshold, achieved respectable median download rates of 87.6 Mbps in the second half of 2025.
Competitive Pricing Drives Market Disruption
Beyond performance improvements, SpaceX has made Starlink more accessible through aggressive pricing strategies. The company now offers free dish hardware rentals and significant service discounts, successfully attracting customers from traditional ISPs in markets like Virginia.
SpaceX reports even higher internal speed measurements, ranging from 108 Mbps to over 300 Mbps depending on location. The company is preparing to launch next-generation V3 satellites that promise gigabit connectivity speeds.
5Gstore Take
Starlink’s speed improvements fundamentally change the satellite internet landscape. With consistent 100+ Mbps performance and competitive pricing, it’s no longer just a rural backup solution – it’s becoming a viable primary internet option that can challenge cable and fiber providers. For businesses considering satellite connectivity, whether for primary service or failover protection, Starlink now offers enterprise-grade performance that was unthinkable just a few years ago.
