Qualcomm testing potential iPhone 5G modem with speeds over 7 Gbps

Qualcomm 5g chip

Qualcomm held its “What’s Next in 5G” event today in San Diego, during which they highlighted their 3rd-gen 5G X60 modem. Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon showed off the latest 5G chip, boasting that it can handle download speeds over 7.5 Gbps and upload speeds at 3 Gbps.

The company also announced that they will be testing the X60 with partners this quarter, leading many to wonder if it will be used in the 5G iPhones that are likely to launch in the fall. Last Spring, Apple and Qualcomm settled a legal battle and Apple secured a supply of 5G chips for its 2020 iPhones. Earlier reports indicated that it would be Qualcomm’s X55 modem that would be used in the iPhone 12 5G lineup, but with Qualcomm’s announcement today and partnership with Apple, it’s possible that Apple may be planning to use the newer X60 instead.
