Investments in 5G Pay off for Ericsson

With Verizon launching their Home 5G service and other major carriers in the US and abroad dedicated to get 5G networks built out and service deployed to the public as soon as possible, manufacturers who have invested in 5G are feeling the benefits already. Ericsson, who has committed a great deal of resources towards 5G research and development, reported a nine percent increase in revenue recently and attributed the surge to 5G. “We continue to invest in our competitive 5G-ready portfolio to enable our customers to efficiently migrate to 5G,” declared Börje Ekholm, Ericsson CEO. “Operators around the world plan for launching 5G services, led by North America.”

Qualcomm Launches WiFi Chips Fast Enough to Rival 5G

Qualcomm’s latest WiFi chips utilize the latest generation of the WiGig standard, with the ability to deliver speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second. This is unlikely to make a practical real-world difference in any current scenario, but WiGig may be used more in the future in the way that 5G is likely to be deployed (e.g. tower to home) and Qualcomm is prepared to compete with the fast speeds 5G promises.

Verizon Discusses How 5G Can be Used in Factories to Improve Automation and Efficiency

Verizon is heavily promoting their recently launched nascent 5G network, and in an article published today they explained how they envision the technology making an impact in environments like factories. In a 5G-driven smart factory, they say, “thousands of sensors at floor level can send a continuous stream of data to the cloud….This robust network ecosystem can in turn help managers better monitor quality, increase speed, respond to supply fluctuations and simplify workflows.”

The increased level of connectivity will enable manufacturers to improve processes for better efficiency and workflow, which could revolutionize factory environments in years to come!

Cellular and Cable Carriers Set to Bid on Frequency for 5G November 14

On November 14, the FCC is set to auction high-frequency spectrum for use in 5G networks, and several companies are confirmed to be bidders. Cellular providers Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are confirmed to be bidders, and cable providers Dish and Cox have also signed up. Other traditional providers like Comcast, Charter, and Altice are not participating.

The available spectrum is primarily in rural areas, including a large portion in Honolulu.

Verizon 5G for Home Live Now in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento

Verizon’s 5G Home service is available now in four US cities, making Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento the first markets in the world with access to commercial 5G. “The world’s first commercial 5G service is here,” said Ronan Dunne, president, Verizon Wireless. “We’ve formed incredible partnerships with many of the world’s leading technology companies, the international technical standards bodies, public officials, developers and our own customers to drive the 5G ecosystem forward, faster than most had predicted. And now, actual customers. It’s been an incredible journey…and we’re just at the starting line.”

White House Shows Commitment to 5G at Summit

Wireless industry leaders and government officials met at the White House today for a summit on 5G, where a commitment to America being a leader in 5G was reiterated. Larry Kudlow, Director of the National Economic Council, described the White House’s approach to 5G as being “free market and free enterprise.” With a commitment to supporting 5G development and infrastructure, the US can expect to add 3 million jobs and up to $1.2 trillion to the U.S. economy.

T-Mobile Add Cellular Plan to Verizon Phone (iOS 12)

Coming soon to an iPhone near you!

Starting with iOS 12 and the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max, there is now the ability to add additional carrier data plans via “Add Cellular Plan” option under Settings.  This uses a technology called eSIM and has been available in the iPad Pro for some time.  It is pretty cool having a single device work with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.

Once T-Mobile offers the ability to “Scan QR Code”, you will be able to add a 2nd line of service to your existing Verizon, AT&T or Sprint iPhone.

 

FCC Issues Order Regarding 5G Reviews

The FCC passed new rules today that will require cities to approve or deny carriers’ requests quickly when a carrier asks to deploy 5G networks. This will prevent cities from taking an inordinately long time to review these requests, which should allow carriers to move forward more quickly with their rollout plans.

Verizon CEO Talks About 5G

Verizon announced it’s 5G Home service last week, and this week CEO Hans Vestberg explained more about the company’s plans to generate revenue from 5G at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference in New York. He described three revenue streams Verizon is counting on: mobility services, followed by fixed wireless access and mobile edge. “[Fixed wireless] is a new market for us,” he said, “[and] the third business case is very much built on the mobile edge where basically you think about many of the new currencies, the capacities, of 5G, they will be enhanced.”
