By-passing a Cellular Carriers Network without a static IP address

Accessing your local devices remotely without port forwarding or router changes

What is CG-NAT?

CG-NAT is a network address translation technique that extends the IPv4 networks on a considerable scale and allows ISPs (internet service providers) to conserve their acquired public IPv4 pool. Every online user has two IP addresses, a public (eg. 83.24.73.243) and a private one (eg. 192.168.1.12.) When a user intends to communicate online, the standard NAT protocol translates their private IPv4 address to a public one. But with CGNAT (LSN or NAT 444), an extra layer of address translation is added. The unique private IP addresses are translated into public IPs shared by multiple users. And this is how ISPs prevent their public IPv4 pool from exhaustion.

What does that mean exactly for me?

While it is excellent from a security standpoint and is great for cellular ISPs it can be frustrating from a network operations standpoint when attempting to reach equipment inside a private network behind a cellular router. Typically how this is dealt with is to buy the use of one of the ISPs static public facing IP addresses that by-passes their internal IPv4 CG-NAT for a direct line of sight to the internet. This of course costs more money which the average home or small business user doesn’t want to deal with. This is where a Reverse Proxy comes into play.

What is a reverse Proxy?

A reverse proxy is a server that sits in front of web servers and forwards client (e.g. web browser) requests to those web servers. Reverse proxies are typically implemented to help increase security, performance, and reliability.

How could this benefit me?

Normally with CG-NAT traditional port forwarding won’t work like it would on a landline based  ISP (eg. Cable, DSL, Fiber) since you are behind the cellular carriers NAT. This is a work around to this issue.

Here are a few use cases for a reverse proxy that would make it attractive to an average user. (Note: Prerequisite for these scenarios is a PC will be required; It can be just a little Raspberry Pi or other PC. I used a Raspberry Pi 4 and a service called LocalXpose for all of these instances.)

Scenarios

A. I need to see a camera at a remote location on a cellular router.

B. I have T-Mobile home internet but want to access my Plex Server remotely.

Scenario A – Remote Camera exposure:

I have an IP camera mounted at a remote cabin connected to a cellular router in the woods. I want to be able to see the video feed from my home. We find the local LAN ip address of your IP camera, in this example I’m going to use 192.168.1.2. Once I know my camera’s IP address I test the feed with VLC Player I open the feed url (rtsp://username:password@192.168.1.2:554) and I see a live feed of the camera. I then jump over to my PC with LocalXpose installed on it. In my case I’m using Linux for the operating System. I use the following command to route my camera feed to one of localxpose’s external URLs:

./loclx tunnel tcp  –port 10554 –to 192.168.1.2:554

This will create a url similar to us.loclx.io:10554. We can plug this URL into VLC player on a computer outside the network (in this case at our home) like so:

rtsp://username:password@camera.loclx.io:10554 and we will see the same live feed we did as if we were on the local network.

Scenario B – Plex Server exposure

This is a similar scenario as with the camera except we are dealing with a different type of device. Plex is an application for sharing media locally (eg. Home videos or music libraries.) In my case I have T-Mobile Home Internet but I want to be able to access my Plex library from outside my local LAN. Much the same way I did with the camera setup, I first get the IP address and port number the Plex server uses (I’m going to use the default port in this case.) My Plex server has an IP address of 10.0.0.12 and the port is 32400. Normally at home I put http://10.0.0.12:32400 into my web browser on my PC and I’m greeted with the login screen for my plex server. Again just like the camera we use a command to forward the traffic but I also want to specify the port:

./loclx tunnel tcp –port 32400 –to 10.0.0.12:32400

This will generate a url similar to this: http://us.loclx.io:32400. We can now put this URL into the browser of a PC (or phone/tablet) outside our home network and access the media on our Plex server.

As you can see in these two examples, a reverse proxy can be extremely useful when you’re behind the bars, so to speak of CG-NAT. I would also like to note that I didn’t go into the fine grain details of using this particular service as it was my goal to give a general example of how it could be used in a compact short read.

How Does the New Search Feature Work at 5Gstore.com?

If you’re new to 5Gstore.com or have not spent much time reviewing our resources, we have several informative videos and blogs available. These cover a number of topics, how-to guides, and tips and tricks. All are related in some manner with the products we carry. We hope you’ll take a closer look, especially now since we’ve made it easier than ever to locate what you’re interested in!

Prior to today, the 5Gstore.com search box would provide suggestions to what you’re typing in, products, and a means to check Peplink serial numbers (for verifying warranty and license options). It will now include blogs and videos. Note that this will search only against the titles of the blogs and videos. See example below.

You can also search blog xxxx or video xxxx and only see blog or video matches.  When searching this way, it looks for matching words within the documents and videos – not just the titles!

Check it out today on 5Gstore.com!

Where Can You Find the Peplink BR1 Mini Core (HW3)?

With much anticipation comes the new Peplink MAX BR1 Mini Core Hardware Revision 3 (HW3). This version of the BR1 Mini is appropriate for M2M or IoT applications where WiFi and GPS are not needed. Without these additional features, it makes the hardware more affordable at a MSRP of $299.

This new hardware supports faster speeds (up to 300Mbps) and an improved overall throughput than the previous HW2 version. Peplink is also providing the feature pack, which users have the option to add on. This pack enables you to use the Ethernet WAN, Hot Failover, WAN Smoothing, GPIO, and Ignition Sensing on your BR1 Mini HW3. You also have access to 3 x Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Even without the feature pack, you still get a single cellular LTE modem (Cat 4) that accepts up to 2 SIM cards for failover purposes (i.e. only one SIM can connect at a time). The modem is compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon as well as other carriers including carriers outside of the U.S. (we recommend checking frequency compatibility when needing an International solution).

This newer generation BR1 Mini has a Micro-Fit industrial power connector, making it more secure than the previous coaxial power connector. Alternatively, for those who want power over Ethernet, you now have active 802.3at PoE support rather than passive PoE.

In addition to the feature pack, customers have the option to bundle services. Just purchase a 2 year or 4 year PrimeCare plan, and you will receive a complimentary feature pack.

In the future, this unit will also support Peplink’s eSIM. For more information about this, check out SpeedFusion Connect LTE details here

This new BR1 Mini Core HW3 is available now! Get your order in before 3pm CT and your order can ship today.

How do I Purchase a Peplink License After My Warranty has Expired?

If you own a Peplink or Pepwave device, you may already be aware of their warranty renewal process. If not, you can read about it in detail here (see Renewal Policy).

In cases where your device is outside of the 30 day grace period, you will need to supply something called a Diagnostic Report. This is a unique report that only the Peplink engineers can open and read. It is used not only to help diagnose device issues, but also to verify the device is operating properly.

As long as the device’s operation is normal, the Report will pass Peplink Support’s test. If they find an issue however, it will cause a failure, in which case you may not be able to proceed with purchasing the warranty license. It is for this reason that we have implemented a new feature on our website.

When you go to purchase a new warranty for your device, but you’re outside the grace period, you’ll be prompted to upload a Diagnostic Report. How exactly is that done you ask? There’s two ways to do this. Let’s take a look.

Obtain Your Diagnostic Report through the Web Admin

First, we have the Web Admin method. If you are connected directly to your Peplink device via Ethernet or WiFi, and you can log into the web admin page, follow the steps* below.

  1. Open a web browser and log into the web admin page (default login is admin/ admin)
    • For Balance routers, the default address is 192.168.1.1
    • For Max and SOHO routers, the default address is 192.168.50.1
  2. Navigate to the “Status” tab and confirm you’re at “Device” on the left (it should automatically load to this page)
  3. Find “Diagnostic Report” towards the bottom of the page
  4. Click “Download” (it may take a few moments to begin as it is loading the data)
  5. Save this file (you will not be able to open it)

*For a video of these steps, see below

Obtain Your Diagnostic Report through InControl 2

Alternatively, if you are remotely located from the device, but have access to it through InControl 2, you can download from there. Follow the steps** below.

  1. Log into your account at https://incontrol2.peplink.com
  2. Select the “Organization” and then the “Group” your device is saved within
  3. Select the device from the “Device List” here and you’ll be taken to the “Device Details” page
  4. On the left, see the “Information” section and click the “Show All” link beside the “Device Name” – Additional details will be revealed
  5. Find “Diagnostic Report” towards the bottom and click “Download
  6. A window will appear with a button that reads “Request for a report” – click this and wait while the request is sent to the device.
  7. After a few moments, a “Download” button will appear – click on this and save the file.

**For a video of these steps, see below.

If you need assistance or have any questions about this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re available Monday thru Friday from 9am to 6pm CST via phone, email, or chat.

How 5Gstore Celebrates Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is all about helping your fellow human and spreading kindness. There are many ways to show people you care. You can donate your time or money to a charity or do something nice for a stranger. Whatever you do this year, it is certainly the thought that counts.

This year, as well as the past few years, our CEO has given to a local organization called Home of the Sparrow (HOS). They provide “Hope, Opportunity, and Support that empowers women and children as they journey from homelessness to self-sufficiency.” The struggles that these individuals endure are becoming more common and it is important to our company that we do what we can to help. If you’d like to learn more about HOS, check them out here. You can also read the sweet thank you letter we received from HOS below.

While we all may not be able to contribute in the same way, we challenge you to do something to give back today. It can literally be anything, as long as generosity is in your heart. For ideas, go to GivingTuesday.org.

As always, our team will be available to help you from 9am to 6pm CST. Reach out to us with any questions via phone, email, or chat.
