This router features four embedded modems and you will need SIM cards with active service from a compatible provider to use them. The HD4 has standard 2FF SIM slots - if you plan to use a micro or nano SIM, you'll need a SIM adapter.

The HD4 MBX combines the bandwidth of 4x Firstnet-ready Gigabit LTE links into a fast, reliable, and secure SD-WAN connection, enabling you to stream high-definition video in real-time. This can all be achieved without investing in any infrastructure. With SpeedFusion-enabled devices on multiple vehicles and aerial resources, you can monitor the situation from multiple perspectives without needing a line-of-sight connection.

The HD4 MBX supports 8x 802.3at PoE so that you can power and connect your cameras and IP phones with minimal cabling. It also delivers 802.11ac Wi-Fi for securely connecting your mobile devices to headquarters. The HD4 MBX supports ignition sensing, which enables the device to turn on and off based on the ignition status of the vehicle.
For additional network resilience, the SIM injector can add up to 8 SIM cards to your deployment. You can separate the router and the SIM injector by up to 150m, making switching SIM cards a breeze.

Features:

  • Internet Connections Supported: 4 Embedded cat 12 LTE Advanced Pro, 3 Wired WAN, 2 USB (view full compatibility chart), WiFi as WAN*
  • Networks Supported for Embedded Modems: 4G LTE: B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B9, B12, B13, B14, B18, B19, B20, B26, B29, B30, B32, B41, B42, B43, B46, B48, B66;  HSPA+: B1, B2, B4, B5, B6, B8, B9, B19, Firstnet
  • WiFi Standard: 802.11ac, 1166Mbps 2x2 MIMO
  • WiFi Range: 300-400' through walls, much greater unobstructed (variable depending on interference from other electronics and physical interference such as walls and ceilings)
  • Ethernet ports: 9 GbE LAN + 2 GbE WAN (1 x LAN can be configured as a third WAN if desired)
  • Size: 2.0 x 11.5 x 7.0
  • Bonding: SpeedFusion VPN Bonding. NOTE: Many factors influence the real-world throughput you'll see from bonded connections, including latency, connection type, connection speeds, traffic type, and reliability on both sides of the SpeedFusion tunnel. Cellular users should note that bonded cellular connections suffer from "flow control" of TCP traffic at the carrier level, and 5Gstore cannot guarantee that bonding multiple cellular connections will result in faster speeds (however, the other benefits of SpeedFusion remain, such as unbreakable VPN, session persistence, and 100% up-time as long as you have 1 healthy WAN).
*Compatibility with all WiFi networks cannot be guaranteed. Networks requiring authentication on a "splash page" (e.g. Starbucks WiFi) in particular can be hit or miss. Also note that certain features available for other WAN connections may not be available via WAW, such as MAC Address Clone or IP Passthrough - refer to the full product manual if you plan to use WAW for more advanced routing.

Is this router plug and play as far as VPN and WiFi? Also, can the MAC address be cloned on the fly?

The Surf SOHO supports SpeedFusion, L2TP, and Open VPN. It also has Wi-Fi as WAN and standard Wi-Fi broadcast features. The router has a default SSID broadcasting and ready to use out of the box.

The MAC address can be manually changed for the physical WAN ports only on Peplink devices.

Does the Pepwave MAX HD4 MBX router work with openvpn?

Yes, see here for details: https://forum.peplink.com/t/configure-remote-user-access-using-openvpn/19757
