Streamlining Network Management: The Benefits of Co-Terminating Router Warranties

Networks serve as the backbone of business operations and ensuring seamless connectivity is paramount. One critical aspect of network management often overlooked is the maintenance of router warranties. Many businesses operate with multiple routers, each requiring individual warranty management. However, there’s a streamlined solution that offers numerous benefits: co-terming router warranties.

Co-terming router warranties involves aligning the expiration dates of warranties across all routers within a network infrastructure. This approach simplifies the administrative burden, enhances budgeting and planning, streamlines support processes, and ensures consistent coverage. Let’s delve deeper into some of these advantages:

  1. Simplified Management: Managing warranties for multiple routers can be a logistical challenge. Co-terming warranties eliminates the need to track individual expiration dates, allowing for centralized and streamlined management of warranties.
  2. Budgeting and Planning: With co-terming, businesses can align warranty expiration dates with their budgeting and planning cycles. This facilitates better financial forecasting and allocation of resources for future router replacements or upgrades.
  3. Streamlined Support: When warranties expire at different times, it can complicate support processes. Co-terming warranties ensures that all routers are covered simultaneously, simplifying support and replacement procedures in case of failures.
  4. Consistent Coverage: Co-terming warranties ensures consistent coverage across all routers in the network. This uniformity minimizes the risk of downtime due to unexpected failures, enhancing overall reliability and performance.
  5. Risk Mitigation and Business Continuity: Relying on routers without warranty coverage poses significant risks to business operations. Hardware failures can result in costly downtime, loss of productivity, and potential data loss. Co-terming router warranties mitigates these risks by ensuring timely support and replacement options. By synchronizing warranty expiration dates, businesses can proactively address hardware issues before they escalate, minimizing the impact on operations. Furthermore, co-terming warranties provide peace of mind, knowing that support is readily available when needed, thereby safeguarding business continuity.

To initiate the co-terming process, it’s essential for businesses to provide the serial numbers of their routers along with the desired expiration date alignment. Armed with this information, vendors can synchronize the warranties accordingly, providing a seamless experience for the business.

In conclusion, co-terming router warranties offers a myriad of benefits for businesses with multiple routers. From simplifying administrative tasks to optimizing budgeting and planning, streamlining support processes, and ensuring consistent coverage, co-terming is a strategy worth considering for efficient network management. By embracing co-terming, businesses can navigate the complexities of network maintenance with greater ease and confidence, ultimately driving productivity and success.

Cloud Management Services for Cellular Routers

What They Are & Why You Should Use Them

When you purchase some sort of electronic device, you normally have the option of purchasing an extended warranty for it. This might not only give you the option of hardware replacement, but added benefits. When it comes to routers – like the ones we carry from Cradlepoint, Digi, Inseego, Peplink, and Sierra Wireless – you may also have the added benefit of a cloud management service.

What is a Cloud Management Service?

This is essentially a website you can log into from anywhere in the world and both monitor and manage your routers remotely. Of course, in order to be able to do this, you must have a valid warranty and or cloud subscription for each of your routers.

Why Should I Use a Cloud Manager?

Cloud management services are somewhat similar to device registrations with the manufacturer. It proves you own the device and protects it from being added to another user’s management account. They help to keep an eye on your devices by monitoring the health of the device, its uptime, and signal strength. Configurations are streamlined, as it allows you to get devices online more quickly.

What Benefits Do Cloud Managers Provide?

Other than remote visibility of your routers’ connection status in real-time, there are several benefits to having cloud management service for your devices.

  • Lower Overall Management Costs: Reducing the cost of configuring and deploying your devices through a single platform.
  • Increased Productivity: Manage multiple devices at the same time and reach your goals more quickly and efficiently.
  • Maintenance: Minimizing the cost of keeping your devices current and secure with easy deployment of software and security updates.
  • Security: Lock down access to your devices to authorized personnel and improve the overall security on your networks.

Common features include:

  • Configuration by device or group
    • Save time by setting up configurations that can then be uploaded to your device or groups of devices. Most devices support Zero touch provisioning (ZTP), which allows you to automatically deploy device configurations over a network connection.
  • Data usage tracking and alerts
    • Avoid overage fees by staying up to date on how much data your device(s) are using.
  • GPS tracking
    • Verify where your device has traveled in the past or view it in real time.
  • Firmware update
    • Ensure proper maintenance for your device(s) by upgrading firmware as needed. This can sometimes be done for a group of devices also.
  • Device diagnostics for troubleshooting
    • Use tools like ping and traceroute to verify how traffic is flowing on your network. Additionally, you may reboot your device as needed or in some cases, you may set a reboot schedule.

Less Common Features

  • Remote access to the web UI
    • Use the management service to log into your device remotely, just like it works locally, or similarly.
  • Remote Access to devices on the LAN of the router
  • VPN Connectivity and simple configuration
    • Link devices with the use of VPN, which can easily be configured through the cloud manager.
  • API support
    • The API is an interface for developers to integrate their systems and/or scripts with the data available in the cloud manager. This may include online/offline status of routers and network interfaces, signal strength and quality of cellular modems, router logs, and more.
  • Fast Renewal Activation
    • Renewing service can be a real pain, but not when it comes to processing licenses for Peplink at 5Gstore.com. We have an automated system that allows you to enter your Peplink serial number in our website search field and it will report back compatible licenses. How to Select the Right Solution for Your Needs

When it comes to choosing the ideal device management solution, several factors come into play. Your choice hinges on the nature of the assets you’re overseeing, your data requirements (including when and where you want it stored), and, naturally, your budget. As you contemplate different device management platforms, here are some key questions to consider:

  1. Where Should Your Data Reside? Sierra Wireless offers two hosting options for your data:
    • Cloud-based: This option entails hosting your device management software and associated data on Amazon Web Services (AWS), taking advantage of AWS’s robust security, scalability, and performance. Cloud-based deployments can save organizations both time and money. They offer a lower entry cost and eliminate the need to build or maintain physical data centers.
    • On-premise: With this choice, the solution is locally installed on your computers and servers. For businesses operating in highly regulated industries, the decision may already be clear, as regulations might dictate on-premise hosting. Others may prefer on-premise hosting for the control and peace of mind it offers by keeping data in-house.
  2. Are Both On-Premise and Cloud Equally Secure? Yes, both on-premise and cloud solutions can be secure, but each has its own strengths and weaknesses. The security of a system largely depends on how organizations secure, manage, and operate it, regardless of its hosting location. Common vulnerabilities include outdated patches, weak security infrastructure, and insufficient monitoring of user access.

The trend has been moving toward cloud management systems due to their scalability and access to specialized teams with expertise in cloud services. Cloud management also reduces the labor-intensive tasks required to maintain on-premise servers. In our recommendation, cloud management is the choice for its ease of use and security that matches or surpasses on-premise alternatives.

  1. Are You Monitoring Fixed or Mobile Assets? Asset monitoring serves various purposes, such as data collection, process monitoring, secure operations, asset lifespan extension, and worker safety and productivity improvements. The level of information needed depends on the type of assets under observation.
    • For fixed assets, tracking can enhance security, prolong asset life, and facilitate telemetry and operational data collection and distribution.
    • Mobile assets offer richer data, including telematics and vehicular information. Ensure your asset management platform can seamlessly integrate and present advanced location and diagnostic data from remote telematics.
  2. Do You Require Real-Time Data Updates? Traditional data analytics involve data gathering followed by analysis. Real-time analytics, tailored to your business needs, continually ingest fresh data, enabling analysts to observe changes as they happen and gain insights in real time, rather than relying solely on retrospective analyses.

The need for real-time data depends on your specific analysis and application requirements. For instance, dispatch and logistics agencies benefit from real-time asset tracking to manage routes effectively. If your use case permits, opting for scheduled data updates can help keep data costs in check.

Comparing Warranties on Common 4G and 5G Routers

There are many factors to consider when selecting a 4G or 5G cellular router. Things like the carrier and frequency band support as well as its hardware and software features are all important. Something else you may not immediately look at is the warranty options. What does the warranty include? Are you losing anything if you don’t renew the warranty? We’re going to review a few manufacturers and their warranty plans.

Cradlepoint

Cradlepoint hardware is sold as a package with warranty, their technical support and NetCloud Manager, which provides cloud-based control of your Cradlepoint devices. When you renew your warranty, this includes the same level of support and cloud management. Options are available for 1, 3 or 5 years.

Without a NetCloud warranty plan you lose access to remote cloud management services and firmware updates, but also certain features. This differs depending on how long since your warranty expired. There is a 30 day grace period. This is known as the non-compliant state. While in the non-compliant state, devices maintain their current routing capabilities, NetCloud functionality, and NetCloud Essentials functionality. They will however lose access to certain Advanced Add-On features.

After the 30 day grace period, devices enter an unlicensed state. At this point they lose access to more features like firmware upgrades, firewall settings, and some VPN settings.

Check out our blog for more information on what happens when your Cradlepoint device is not licensed

Digi

Digi provides a three-year standard warranty at no additional charge on their cellular routers and gateways. This is upgradeable to 5 years with purchase of a Digi Remote Manager® 5 year subscription applicable to the product purchased only at the time of product purchase and with product registration at that time in the Digi Remote Manager application. Thankfully, no features are lost when the device is out of warranty. If support is needed, 5Gstore customers can always reach out to our support team via support@5gstore.com

Inseego

Inseego includes a one-year standard warranty with their hardware. This also gives users access to Inseego Connect Basic, their cloud management service. This allows customers to use Inseego Connect free with a partial set of features. Extended warranty options are offered along with Inseego Connect. This is also bundled with support and different levels of configuration and management options. Inseego Connect Basic is included for the life of the device so no features are lost when the device is not under warranty.

Peplink

Peplink devices come with a care plan, either Essential or Prime. These plans not only cover the hardware, but also include technical support, backup connectivity, software support, and cloud management. All hardware comes with a one-year limited warranty. If needed, you may extend your coverage and even purchase a “plus” plan that includes 24/7 support rather than 8/5.

Without a Peplink care plan, you lose access to hardware services, certain features as well as your cloud management. You’ll also still receive technical support, but the response time may be much slower. For some devices, if a care plan is not needed, you may purchase a stand alone plan for cloud management

Sierra Wireless

Sierra Wireless warranties differ depending on the model you have. For most devices – this includes AirLink LX, MP, RV, RX and XR-series routers, – you will receive a one year standard warranty. Other models, such as the MG90, come with a three year standard warranty. Extended warranties may be available for certain products, either on a stand-alone basis or as part of a support package. Note that firmware updates that fix security issues or fix network issues are included whether a customer pays for support or not. Firmware updates to add new or improved features will only be available to those who pay for support.

How do I Purchase a Peplink License After My Warranty has Expired?

If you own a Peplink or Pepwave device, you may already be aware of their warranty renewal process. If not, you can read about it in detail here (see Renewal Policy).

In cases where your device is outside of the 30 day grace period, you will need to supply something called a Diagnostic Report. This is a unique report that only the Peplink engineers can open and read. It is used not only to help diagnose device issues, but also to verify the device is operating properly.

As long as the device’s operation is normal, the Report will pass Peplink Support’s test. If they find an issue however, it will cause a failure, in which case you may not be able to proceed with purchasing the warranty license. It is for this reason that we have implemented a new feature on our website.

When you go to purchase a new warranty for your device, but you’re outside the grace period, you’ll be prompted to upload a Diagnostic Report. How exactly is that done you ask? There’s two ways to do this. Let’s take a look.

Obtain Your Diagnostic Report through the Web Admin

First, we have the Web Admin method. If you are connected directly to your Peplink device via Ethernet or WiFi, and you can log into the web admin page, follow the steps* below.

  1. Open a web browser and log into the web admin page (default login is admin/ admin)
    • For Balance routers, the default address is 192.168.1.1
    • For Max and SOHO routers, the default address is 192.168.50.1
  2. Navigate to the “Status” tab and confirm you’re at “Device” on the left (it should automatically load to this page)
  3. Find “Diagnostic Report” towards the bottom of the page
  4. Click “Download” (it may take a few moments to begin as it is loading the data)
  5. Save this file (you will not be able to open it)

*For a video of these steps, see below

Obtain Your Diagnostic Report through InControl 2

Alternatively, if you are remotely located from the device, but have access to it through InControl 2, you can download from there. Follow the steps** below.

  1. Log into your account at https://incontrol2.peplink.com
  2. Select the “Organization” and then the “Group” your device is saved within
  3. Select the device from the “Device List” here and you’ll be taken to the “Device Details” page
  4. On the left, see the “Information” section and click the “Show All” link beside the “Device Name” – Additional details will be revealed
  5. Find “Diagnostic Report” towards the bottom and click “Download
  6. A window will appear with a button that reads “Request for a report” – click this and wait while the request is sent to the device.
  7. After a few moments, a “Download” button will appear – click on this and save the file.

**For a video of these steps, see below.

5Gstore / Peplink Service Automation

All router manufacturers offer or require yearly service/subscriptions and/ or special service add-ons that need to be renewed. This is a tedious process not only for the end-user (customer) but also for the reseller and the manufacturer as well.  Here is how it works now.  Place an online order for a service item.  The reseller gets it and has to create a purchase order and manually submit an order to the manufacturer.  The manufacturer gets the order and has to manually process it.  Typically, this takes less than 24 hours but could take longer.

Sometimes, you are in a bind and need to purchase/update your router (or fleet of routers). NOW, you cannot wait 24 hours (or more if on the weekend).  What happens if something expires Saturday at midnight?  You have to wait until Monday for the order to first be processed.

5Gstore and Peplink have partnered to automate and speed up this process.  When placing an order for any service item at 5Gstore, we have worked with Peplink to create a robust API.  When you place any service order, 24/7, your order will be processed and fulfilled in MINUTES.  All automatically – we will even check your order to make sure you don’t mix up serial numbers.  We can process 10 or 100,000 orders a day and it will be automatic.  This is what the new process looks like:

If your warranty has expired and you need Incontrol2 access at 11pm or on a Sunday, just place your order with 5Gstore for instant processing.  It doesn’t matter where you ordered your Peplink device, we can help you 24/7!!  During checkout, you are required to enter the S/N of your Peplink device, our system verifies that your service item is compatible with your device.  If you have a bunch of devices that you need to order, you can export your S/Ns and directly import them during the checkout process.

How To Find your Peplink Serial Number (S/N)

Peplink is adding more “Feature Packs” to convert a low-end SKU to have more features and make them equivalent to older higher-end SKUs.  With this upcoming change, 5Gstore will be able to add any Feature Pack that is on your order as it is shipped (or instantly as you needs change).

Lastly, we have simplified the complicated when it comes to ordering service items.  Just enter your Peplink S/N in our search box and we will display all the service items specifically available for your S/N (this works for all Peplink S/Ns).

Just another way, 5Gstore helps you stay connected!
